Starting Something New

Starting something new, whether that’s CeMAP, a finance course or a complete career change, is exciting… but it can also knock your confidence more than you expect.

One minute you’re buzzing about it, the next you’re thinking “why did I sign up for this?” or convinced everyone else is way ahead of you.

You might start second-guessing yourself, putting things off, or feeling like you’ve somehow slipped through the cracks and don’t really belong there.

It’s a strange feeling, especially if you’re normally quite confident.

But honestly, it’s really common.

Why Did It Hit Harder Than You Expected?

It’s not just the learning.

Most of the time, you’ve got a full life going on alongside it. Work, money, kids, general life admin… and now you’re trying to study on top of that.

So straight away, it feels like more pressure.

Then there’s the comparison thing. You look at other people and assume they’ve got it all figured out, when in reality, they’re probably thinking the exact same thing as you.

And the big one… you’re used to knowing what you’re doing.

Going from that to being new again, asking questions, not getting things straight away… it can feel uncomfortable.

What Actually Helps (From Experience)

That voice in your head isn’t always right

The “I’m behind” or “I’m not cut out for this” thoughts feel real, but most of the time, they’re just fear talking.

You’re not meant to know everything yet

Sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget. You’re learning. Of course, it’s not all going to click straight away.

You’re doing better than you think

Even just sticking at it counts. You don’t always notice progress while you’re in it.

You’re not starting from scratch

You’ve got life experience, work experience, common sense… all of that helps more than you realise.

Say it out loud

As soon as you talk to someone else about how you’re feeling, you realise you’re not the only one. Not even close.

How Can It Show Up?

It’s not always obvious.

Sometimes it’s brushing off things you’ve done well. Sometimes it’s thinking everyone else is more capable. Sometimes it’s worrying you’re going to fall behind. Or just that feeling of “I don’t really belong here”.

It can also make you hold back a bit. Not asking questions, overthinking things, putting stuff off.

The Honest Truth

That feeling doesn’t magically disappear.

Even people who seem confident still get it. They just don’t let it stop them.

Confidence comes after, not before. It builds by just getting on with it, even when you feel unsure.

So if you’re feeling like this, it’s not a sign you’ve made a mistake.

It just means you’re doing something new.
